SHORINJI KEMPO NORTH SHORE BRANCH CAMP 2011
For the 4th year in a row, martial arts club Shorinji Kempo North Shore ran a camp at Camp Maynard, Albany, from 25-27 February 2011. The camp was an opportunity for students from around New Zealand to come together to train and to socialise. "We had a great turn out with students coming from as far as Blenheim for the weekend camp", commented organiser of the event, 3rd Dan black belt, Stephen Reid. As well as a heavy training schedule each day including theory and practical, students also had fun on the confidence course at the camp venue. Shorinji Kempo North Shore Branch Master, Darren Louie, said "the feedback from the camp has been very positive. We had approximately forty students from 10 year olds to adults in their 50s, from white belts through to 5th Dan black belts and everyone learnt something." Darren said "the aim of the camp was to work hard, have fun, enjoy great food, including 16 crayfish as part of the Saturday night dinner, and get to know our fellow students better." Darren and Stephen both commented that the camp was so successful because people from all types of backgrounds come together for a common interest. A few kenshi also did gradings at the camp and Shorinji Kempo North Shore is pleased to congratulate their following students who passed gradings: Tenyu Keene who passed his 1st Kyu grading and Juan and Lucas Carrascosa (father and son) who passed their 2nd Kyu grading. Shorinji Kempo was developed in Japan as a means of living half for oneself and half for others, rather than simply a method of self defence. It utilises a balance between hard and soft techniques, incorporating circular, straight and curved movements. There is no sense of competition, rather the dojo is a place where one can go to further oneself mentally and physically in a spirit of mutual support and understanding. Shorinji Kempo is a not for profit organisation where all club funds go back into the club for the students. Anyone interested is welcome to come and try the first two lessons for free. The North Shore Branch trains every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at Birkdale Intermediate School, Dance Studio, 200 Birkdale Road.
